Used Car Buying Tips for Novice Buyers

Bobbie Percer's Blog | Used Car Buying Tips for Novice Buyers

Are you in the market for a used or pre-owned car? If you are a novice with the whole car buying process, it can be overwhelming. The Covid pandemic has created a shortage of microchips for new car manufacturers and that has created a shortage in new cars on the market. This has driven buyers to used or pre-owned cars and that has created a shortage of used cars out on the market.  Car buying can be easy and even fun, and the more information you have ahead of time, the better off you’ll be. Here are 3 tips for the novice used car buyer looking for a great first experience.

  • Identify Your Lifestyle Needs and Wants
Before you go to buy a used car, you need to understand your lifestyle and the very specific needs and wants you have. Your lifestyle will dictate what type of car/truck/SUV you need, as well as the financial requirements you will need to make it happen. Figure out what your needs and wants are, and go from there.
    • Are you a stay-at-home mom regularly chauffeuring a family of five around town? You might need a larger car.
    • Are you on the fast track commuting to and from a bustling city center every day? You might need a car that has lots of horsepower.
    • Are you hauling equipment on back roads daily? You might need a truck or SUV with a cargo area.
  • Make Sure Not To Skip Your Test Drive
Ask to test drive those cars that you’re interested in when you go to the dealership. Test drives only take a little time from your daytime, and they’re the best way for you to become acquainted with your potential new car. You will find that you may love the way one particular car looks on the outside, but you may dislike the interior. If you’re not completely in love with one model, give another manufacturer’s similar vehicle a try as well. Test driving lots of vehicles will give you insight into which car on the lot is right for you.
  • Put Your Salesperson To Work
Salespeople are there to help. We are your guide and I am here to help. Ask questions. Ask me as many questions as you can, both about the vehicle and about the process of buying the vehicle. Inquire about the history of the vehicle and potential maintenance. Ask about what the trim level package includes. Ask about other cars that might be similar. We are here to help you get behind the wheel of your dream car and will answer any questions you pose to the best of our ability.
